Frequently Asked Questions
I’m married. Can I apply to ACE South Bend?
Absolutely. Married and single people are welcome to apply to ACE South Bend.
How does community work in ACE South Bend?
Because ACE South Bend encourages applications from married people and people with families, members are not required to live together in community. Members may live together in community if they choose, but it is not a requirement. ACE South Bend participants meet regularly during the summer and throughout the school year to support one another and to discuss the challenges and joys of beginning teaching.
How long is the commitment to ACE South Bend?
Participants commit to teaching in the Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese for two years while members of the ACE Master of Education degree program, and afterwards must commit to teach in Catholic schools for two of the following five years.
Can I choose the school in which I’ll serve?
ACE places participants in schools based on the needs of the schools, which vary from year to year. On the application, you’ll be asked what subject area and grade level you feel drawn to teach, and we try to match your teaching interests and qualifications with the needs of the schools. We also ask if you have a preference for the school in which you will teach. However, because of the dynamics of the placement process, it is not possible to guarantee the particular school in which you’ll serve.
I’ve been out of college for a long time. Do I need to track down my professors for faculty recommendations?
The Notre Dame graduate school has made accommodations for ACE South Bend members who have been out of school for some time. Recommendations from employers or other people who could speak to your ability to succeed at the graduate level while teaching full-time are acceptable.
