ACE is proud to be a part of the national movement for citizen service. Most ACE participants who are United States citizens qualify for an annual education award from the Corporation for National Service, part of the National Service Initiative signed into law by President Clinton in 1993. The $4,725 award is valid for seven years and is available to assist ACE teachers and graduates in repaying federal loans from their undergraduate education or to help finance future graduate study.

What is the Corporation for National Service?

Created in 1993 with bipartisan support of Congress, the President, and community groups nationwide, the Corporation for National Service is a public-private partnership that administers three national service initiatives:

  1. AmeriCorps, which includes hundreds of local and national sponsors, as well as VISTA and the National Civilian Community Corps;
  2. National Senior Service Corps, which includes Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program; and
  3. Learn and Serve America, which provides models and resources for teachers integrating service into classrooms from kindergarten through college.

What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with educational awards in exchange for a year or two of community service. AmeriCorps members help meet the nation’s critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment.

What if I teach religion? How can I earn an education award?

If you serve in ACE primarily as a religion teacher, you cannot earn an AmeriCorps Education Award. However, ACE commits to providing its own education award in the same amount for those members who are unable to earn AmeriCorps awards for this reason.
