Culturally Responsive Classrooms

ACE Professional Development’s workshops for culturally responsive pedagogy provide the knowledge and tools to establish communities of educators who collaborate to design instruction that meets the needs of their unique students and school environments. Through the workshops, participants will develop the skills to act as researchers who identify and assess localized cultures and knowledge sources through interactions with families and other community members. They will also learn methods for establishing collaborative communities of educators that facilitate the sharing and utilization of local information and resources, known as “funds of knowledge”. The resulting instruction will address core academic standards while engaging students more fully in classroom activities by connecting content with their existing knowledge. It will also make better use of limited educational resources by providing teachers with opportunities to utilize community resources in the classroom.

Workshop Outcomes

Teachers will have:
  • An understanding of the dynamic nature of culture as it is lived on a daily basis.
  • Tools to investigate localized cultures, knowledge, and resources.
  • Strategies to form, maintain, and maximize collaborative communities of teachers.
  • Examples of and opportunities to design culturally-responsive instruction that is based on local “funds of knowledge”.
