Joyce Johnstone, Ph.D.

Joyce Johnstone serves as the Ryan Director of Educational Outreach and the Senior Director for Program Development for the Institute for Educational Initiatives at the University of Notre Dame.  Her primary role involves outreach programs to local schools and teachers, serving as the liaison for all state initiatives and as Director of Educator Licensing, and directing the Teachers of English as a New Language Program as well as the new Teachers of Mild Disabilities Program.  Dr. Johnstone led the efforts to replicate the alternative service-through-teaching program on other campuses, and initiated the University Consortium for Catholic Education, an organization of 15 universities with teaching-service programs.  Prior to coming to Notre Dame in 1998, Dr. Johnstone served as Dean of the Education at Marian University in Indianapolis for 20 years.  She also initiated and directed the Indiana Catholic Principals Institute, a professional development program for all Catholic school principals in Indiana.  
Dr. Johnstone has held several leadership roles in teacher education at both the state and national level.  In 2009, Indiana Governor Mitchell E. Daniels appointed Dr. Johnstone to a four-year term on the Indiana Professional Standards Board.  She has been both an elementary and a special education teacher.  She holds degrees from The Catholic University of America, Butler University, and Indiana University.
