Answering Christ’s call to welcome the strangers among us is at the heart of the English as a New Language (ENL) program, which seeks to increase the number of Catholic school teachers with expertise in teaching students who speak a language other than English at home.
The ENL program is a one-year, 18 credit hour certification program at the University of Notre Dame. Since its inception, the ENL program has helped Catholic school teachers across the country and the world learn to support English language learners by promoting cultural inclusion, implementing innovative teaching strategies, and making lesson and assessment modifications. The curriculum of the ENL program is tailored specifically to the reality of Catholic schools, and credit can lead to ENL/ESL/ELL certification in most states.
The ENL program begins with a two week summer session beginning in mid-July on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. After these two weeks, participants in the program complete 6 credit hours online for both the fall and the spring semesters.
Admission is granted on a rolling basis. Applicationswill be reviewed beginning in February of each academic year.
