QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB DESCRIPTION: TEACHER OF RELIGION
1. A religion teacher must possess an undergraduate or graduate degree in religious studies or the equivalent; relevant experience is desired;
2. A religion teacher must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church, with a positive reference from his/her pastor;
3. A teacher, as applicant, must make available for review other references that testify to the applicant’s professional competence and good character;
4. A candidate must undergo a police background check as required by diocesan policy and state law;
5. A teacher is responsible for preparing and implementing effective lessons in accordance with the outlined curriculum and the instructions of the administration and departmental chairperson;
6. A teacher must demonstrate effective and professional classroom management skills and practices;
7. A teacher must maintain a positive learning environment;
8. A teacher must be familiar with the mission statement of The Prout School and put the statement into regular practice;
9. A teacher must communicate effectively with students, parents, and the administration;
10. A teacher will treat students, colleagues, parents, and fellow employees positively and with respect, and according to good professional practice;
11. A teacher must adhere to administrative deadlines among which are deadlines pertaining to lesson plans, grading and reporting of grades, and preparing letters of recommendation for students in a timely way;
12. A teacher must work collaboratively with the guidance department and administrators;
13. A teacher must understand and abide by confidentiality and all the rules of The Prout School as stated in the faculty and student handbooks;
14. A teacher must possess or attain familiarity with technology and grading software, specifically Grade Quick and Edline.
15. A teacher must be able and willing to communicate by email and phone with parents and administrators;
16. A full-time position consists of teaching 5 classes daily;
17. Except for illness or an excused absence, a teacher must be available for teaching on every school day of the annual school calendar, with the understanding that the annual calendar is subject to revision, as may be required by necessity, or by emergencies such as snow days;
18. A teacher must accept duties and other daily assignments such as cafeteria and hallway monitoring, and homeroom duty, as determined by the principal or his/her designee;
19. A teacher is expected to attend all of the following: school liturgies, assemblies, after-hours faculty meetings, in-service time, “open houses,” various “Parent and Back to School Nights,” report card conference nights, graduation, and other special events as determined by the administration, even if these events fall on weekends;
20. A teacher is expected to support student athletics, fine arts presentations, and student activities by occasional attendance at such events;
21. The teacher work day begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m.;
22. Faculty are expected to abide by all rules and guidelines of the Diocese of Providence and the Administration of The Prout School
23. Faculty in the Religion Department are expected to be knowledgeable regarding the magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church, and they are expected to explain and support it effectively in the classroom setting.
