DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Parish (South Bend, Indiana) seeks a Director of Christian Formation. As a member of the Pastoral Team, this full-time minister furthers the mission of the Parish through oversight of the process that includes both Christian initiation and ongoing formation for the Christian life. The Director of Christian Formation works to support and encourage the conversion and growth in faith of all parishioners, as individuals and in community, by providing opportunities for all age groups to hear the Gospel, to celebrate our sacramental life in Christ, and to live as disciples in the world. This is done in collaboration with the Pastor and other members of the Pastoral Team.
The Director of Christian Formation oversees and directs the process of Christian initiation, including both the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and sacramental preparation for children. Also, he or she has responsibility for the development of faith formation opportunities for parishioners of all ages, including the religious education program. Additionally, the Director of the Christian Formation provides pastoral leadership for the Christian Formation Commission, which advises the Pastoral Council and the Pastor in this area. Finally, he or she is responsible for related administrative duties and for maintaining a relationship with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
Qualified applicants will have a love for the Church, be conversant in Church teaching, and have a pastoral theological understanding. They will have a collaborative spirit and a desire to grow with the Parish community. Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree, and at least one year of ministry experience. A bachelor’s degree in theology or a related field is preferred; an advanced degree in ministry is highly preferred.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to both the mission of the Church and to that of the Parish. We are a community of God’s people led by religious of the Congregation of Holy Cross since the Parish was founded in 1853, and a vibrant worshiping community with a grade school that places great emphasis on Christian education and formation.
Qualified applicants should have openness to ongoing training. In the area of Christian initiation, this includes additional sacramental study, liturgical study or participation in North American Forum on the Catechumenate training sessions. In the area of faith formation, this includes additional study of levels of faith development and methods of adult catechesis and formation.
The Director of Christian Formation is expected to maintain daytime office hours, with some flexibility as needed for meetings and events during evenings and weekends. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and in compliance with Diocesan guidelines. Benefits include health and life insurance, paid holidays, and the Diocesan retirement plan.
