Laura Bush Visits Holy Redeemer

To mark Catholic Schools Week and celebrate the ACE Magnificat partnership with Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Washington DC, Fr. Tim Scully, CSC and Principal Ben Ketchum (ACE 4, ALP 3) hosted the First Lady for a visit to see the school in action.

Holy Redeemer, an inner-city Catholic school that serves the African-American community, gathered its community, along with several leaders of the ACE program to welcome Laura Bush. Her speech was tremendous in its support of the school, the mission of the Church to serve the poor, and especially of Notre Dame and ACE’s efforts to assist.

ACE Service in the Gulf Coast

Nearly two and a half years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, residents are still working to rebuild their community. Responding to their need for continued relief, the ACE program sponsored and organized a weeklong trip to the area, with a focus on restoration of Catholic schools.

The Gulf Coast Service Trip took place over the last week of Notre Dame’s Winter Break and was led by Liz Stowe (ACE 12), Chris Broughton and Aaron Wall (both ACE 11), who are members of the ACE pastoral staff. Accompanied by a dozen undergraduate students of all ages, the group made the long 15 hour trek down to New Orleans to assist with the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts at the two newest ACE schools – St. Peter Claver and Cathedral Academy – both located in the heart of the city.

Before their arrival to New Orleans, the group visited two ACE schools in the greater Gulf Coast region, St. Thea Bowman in Jackson, MS and Resurrection Catholic Elementary School in Pascagoula, MS. While at these schools, the group assisted current ACE teachers in their classrooms and joined the community to repair the schools and improve the surrounding areas. “We did odd jobs. We painted benches, cleaned a lot of windows, and in the afternoon we were working with the kids,” recalled Greg Robinson, a sophomore who work for the ACE program and participated in the trip.

One of the most poignant moments in the week was when the group had an opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from those who had lived through Katrina. The students were able visit areas most devastated by the storm, and developed a true understanding of the help that is still needed in the Gulf Coast. Throughout the week, the group learned more about recovery efforts and brought support in whatever ways they could.

The week concluded with a Mass and dinner hosted by Sonny and Taryn Nunes of the New Orleans ND Alumni Club. The trip was an enormous success by all accounts and truly led to a new sense of urgency to take action on behalf of those who are still living in dire conditions. The ND students who participated in the Gulf Coast relief efforts have taken decisive action since returning to campus to share what they learned with the campus community. The students have organized a Katrina Relief Awareness Day to challenge students to be mindful about how much rebuilding still remains.
