Jacksonville is one of the original ACE sites and has been hosting ACEteachers since ACE began. We live in one of the largest and best houses inACE, newly renovated over this past summer, and with enough room to offer each member of ACE JAX his or her own room! Our home is a former convent located on the beautiful river front grounds of Bishop Kenny High School and sits directly across the river from the Jacksonville Jaguars NFLstadium. As ACE teachers, we also make it to a Jaguars’ game or two. We are located in the beautiful and sunny state of Florida, only 20 minutes away from the beach and community trips to the beach happen almost every weekend! Bishop Kenny is also right next to downtown Jacksonville with a great view of the five bridges spanning the St. John’s River. There is easy access to the main thoroughfares of the city that can take you pretty much anywhere throughout Jacksonville. To top it all off, the Jacksonville community has its very own chapel in our home where we celebrate community mass once a month with our ACE chaplain. Bishop Kenny also provides access to tennis and basketball courts, a track, and allows us to enjoy high school football games.
Jacksonville is actually the largest city in the US – by land area – so the city is very spread out and each area of the city has its own unique flavor and atmosphere to enjoy. Jacksonville is home to two Naval Stations – the Naval Air Station, which hosts an annual air show, and Mayport Naval Station, home to more than two-dozen naval ships and vessels. Mayport is the third largest Naval facility in the continental US. The city is only 25 minutes away fron Ponte Vedra Beach, where The Player’s Golf Championship takes place each year. Jacksonville is the host city for the world’s largest outdoor Cocktail Party, a part of the notorious Florida-Georgia Football Classic each fall. Jacksonville is an hour north of St. Augustine, the country’s oldest established city, five hours north of Miami, and two and a half hours from Disney World in Orlando.
Being able to go to the beach in December and going out to our favorite local restaurant, European Street Café!
