Archbishop Gomez Visits Holy Cross Grade School

GomezTeaser

Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles visited Holy Cross School in South Bend on October 3 to celebrate Mass and visit the school's dual-language immersion program.

Archbishop Gomez, who leads the nation's largest Catholic archdiocese, was in South Bend as a guest of Dr. Luis Fraga, the director of the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame and a fellow in the Institute for Educational Initiatives. Members of ACE's English as a New Language team and Dr. Fraga have been working together at Holy Cross to help the school start the first dual-language immersion program in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

Besides celebrating Mass, Archbishop Gomez read De la cabeza a los pies by Eric Carle (From Head to Toe) in Spanish to pre-kindergarten students in the immersion class as ACE's Clare Roach read it in English. The class also sang "Just One Small Voice" to the Archbishop in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language to show their love of language.
