ENL Professional Development

English learners (ELs) represent the fastest growing student population in the United States. As the number of English learners entering schools increases, researchers in language acquisition, deJong and Harper (2013), report that less than twenty-five percent of educators have ENL formation, and underscore that teachers prepared to address the unique challenges of language learners is key to the academic success of these students. Catholic schools are faced with an urgent moral imperative to form educators to affect student retention, motivation, confidence, and academic outcomes–all challenges faced by ELs.

The English as a New Language team offers a number of ways for educators to increase their expertise in serving English learners.
