Student leadership and well-being are connected to every academic discipline, as all full-time teachers are also grade level advisors.  

The school offers a coed program for young children at the Barat Center for Early Childhood Education and then an all-girls experience from K-12 on our 110-acre campus in Greenwich, Connecticut.  We are proudly part of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools.

We are currently seeking a Lower School Associate Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.

Reports to: Head of Lower School
FLSA Status: Exempt

 Job Summary

Lower School Associate Teachers support Lower School Lead Teachers in providing a stimulating and developmentally appropriate educational environment in a way that is in accordance with the Goals and Criteria of a Sacred Heart education and the philosophy that implements it. This philosophy includes providing children opportunities to develop spiritual, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills. Lower School Associate Teachers report to the Head of Lower School and are expected to be in school from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. (4:30 p.m. 1x per week all-school and division-specific meetings). This is a two-year program with the expectation to participate in an Associate Teacher Mentoring Program with the Assistant Head of School and the Lead Teacher(s).

Essential Functions

Embrace and effectively communicate the mission, vision, and philosophy of the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart

Enthusiastically interact with all members of the SHG school community, exhibiting flexibility in thought and action

Demonstrate an ability to multitask with attention to detail and organization

Enthusiastically model and exemplify the behaviors and positive attitudes expected of all members of the SHG community

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all faculty and staff members

Duties and Responsibilities:

Support Lower School Lead Teacher(s) in the preparation of their classrooms and classroom materials (i.e. organizing materials for the start of school, creating bulletin boards, making copies, etc.)

If assigned to more than one classroom in the grade level (up to two classrooms), coordinate and execute a schedule in which time is split in accordance with the Lead Teachers’ needs

Plan and prepare a supportive and caring classroom environment with each Lower School Lead Teacher so that children can learn and interact positively with one another

Work 1-1 and in small groups with students to support the lessons taught by the Lower School Lead Teachers

After some time spent in the classroom, begin to lead lessons in the classroom a few times per week

Attend specials classes as an extra set of hands, when necessary

Actively engage in assigned duties: lunch, recess, car, and bus dismissal

Attend and participate in all faculty meetings and workshop days as they are scheduled during the year 

Substitute as a lead teacher when the lead teacher is not available (i.e. sick or absent)

 
All Associate Teachers are expected to:

To assume serious collaborative responsibility for the educational environment of the School by conducting themselves at all times in a responsible, ethical, and professional manner 

To be available one week before the opening of School to attend teachers’ meetings, etc., and to be available one week after the Upper School’s graduation to attend teachers’ meetings and complete end-of-year duties 

To participate fully in regular school programs, e.g., committees, assemblies, field trips, etc. 

To assume responsibilities as assigned for the supervision of students, including at times of early dismissal due to inclement weather

To assist at School functions designated by the Head of School as necessary for the operation of the School, e.g., Back-to-School Night, Open House, Parent/Teacher Conferences, etc. 
(To note: These duties may sometimes extend beyond the normal hours for school.)

To maintain high standards for his/her ongoing professional development

To use technology effectively as part of classroom instruction 

 
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree 

Enrolled in a Master’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education (or within a year of hire)

1-2 years of experience working with Lower School students

Proficient in technology, including Google Suite

Strong time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Good organizational and planning abilities

Good interpersonal skills

Passion for supporting children and young adults, recognizing the important role of educational institutions in their lives, families, and communities
