ACE Summer 2018 in Photos

EndofSummer2018

As the new school year begins, take a moment to look back at some of the many highlights from ACE Summer 2018.

First-year ACE Teaching Fellows spend part of their summer student teaching in local schools. An ACE tradition is for the second-year teachers to send them off from South Dining Hall on the first morning of their student teaching. The second-years decorate, dress up, and cheer on the (often nervous) first-years. The group photo is of all the second-years.

The ACE community gathers most nights for Mass in Dillon Hall’s chapel. This night, our celebrant was Bishop Joseph Tyson of the Diocese of Yakima. Bishop Tyson was in town to give the keynote address earlier in the day to the School Pastors’ Institute.
The leaders of our Notre Dame ACE Academies, our network of 11 schools in Florida, Indiana, and Arizona, gathered the week of June 25 to recharge for the year. The week featured planning, prayer, and reflection.
Mike Agrippina (ACE 25) will be teaching middle school language arts at San Juan del Rio Catholic School in Jacksonville this fall. Here, he’s working with a student at Navarre Middle School as part of his student teaching.
ACE Teaching Fellows take a break in the middle of ACE summer for a retreat at Ronora Lodge. The retreat includes large-group reflections and ACE’s famous paired walks.

Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ, founder and executive director of Los Angeles’ Homeboy Industries and 2017 Laetare Medal winner, spoke to ACE Teaching Fellows, members of the Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program, and participants in our Adelante Conference on July 9.

ACE commencement weekend begins with a Mass in the Grotto. Later in the weekend, members of ACE Teaching Fellows and the Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program received their master’s degrees.

Each ACE community spends an evening doing a service project in South Bend. In this picture, the Pensacola community is working at the Center for the Homeless.
Second-year ACE teachers put on a teaching conference each summer – an afternoon-long series of workshops to help our teachers refine their craft. In this photo, (L-R) Sheila Doyle (ACE 24, Denver), Casey Gelchion (ACE 24, St. Petersburg), and Mary Driewer (ACE 24, Stockton) present All Aboard the LeaderSHIP: Steering Students Toward Success. Not pictured is John Kunst (ACE 24, Corpus Christi).
ACE takes photos of each community during the summer, but not all of them are serious. Here Mobile protects themselves from the rain.
ACE takes photos of each community during the summer, but not all of them are serious. Here Stockton shows their love for the Beatles.
ACE teachers also put on an annual talent show. Many talents are on display, including singing, dancing, and a hot-dog-eating contest. Here Owen Tuite (ACE 25, Denver) and Jesse Shank (ACE 25, Baton Rouge) battle to a tie by eating nine hot dogs in five minutes.
The STEM Trustey Fellows gather on campus each summer to bring innovative methods of teaching science, technology, engineering, and math back to their schools.
ACE has its own bookstore basketball tournament. Here John Cunningham (ACE 25, Mission, TX) goes up for a shot. The team of ACE 24 teachers beat the ACE 25 teachers.
Drue Tranquill and Brandon Wimbush (shown here with Dr. Matt Kloser, the director of the Notre Dame Center for STEM Education) spoke to the STEM Trustey Fellows about the importance of leadership.
