Dr. Mike Macaluso—a Fellow within the Institute for Educational Initiatives and faculty member in the Education, Schooling, and Society program and the Alliance for Catholic Education – has received a Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.
Dr. Macaluso is one of just 20 faculty members to be selected by the Office of the Provost for this honor, and the recipients are identified through a process that includes peer and student nominations.
“I love teaching,” Macaluso said. “I've felt teaching was my calling, my vocation, from a very young age. It's wonderful to be recognized in this way for something you love doing.”
The Joyce Awards, established in 2007, are supported by a gift from the late Father Joyce’s classmates of Notre Dame’s Class of 1937. They honor faculty members who have had a profound influence on undergraduate students through sustained exemplary teaching, and, in particular, recognize professors who create environments that stimulate significant student learning, elevate students to a new level of intellectual engagement and foster students’ ability to express themselves effectively within their disciplines.
In Fall 2021, Macaluso taught a new course, Public Pedagogies, which examines how different physical and non-physical spaces educate people. In the spring, Macaluso taught Difference and Diversity in Young Adult Literature, which examines the educational implications of identity through the medium of young adult literature.
In addition to teaching in the ESS program, Macaluso also teaches and supervises first- and second-year teachers in the ACE Teaching Fellows program.
