The principal role involves leading the day-to-day operations of a safe, close-knit community comprised of 1,100 students, 150 dedicated faculty and staff members, overseeing curriculum development, and nurturing the faculty and staff towards achieving the highest level of success in all areas of operation. The Opportunity: Principal

The Principal is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of the high school. Responsible for planning and supervising in relation to the school administration, faculty, staff, curriculum, student programs, and parent contacts. Works cooperatively with the President who is ultimately responsible for the implementation of the school’s philosophy and mission statement. The Principal should be an actively participating Catholic who supports the Catholic mission and philosophy of Carmel Catholic High School. The Principal should be a proven educational leader who is able to move Carmel Catholic High School to the highest level of achievement in all areas of its operation. Works with the Director of Human Resources in recruiting and hiring of all faculty members and personnel related matters. Provides faculty and academic staff supervision and evaluation.

Background Required:

Minimum of 5 years administrative experience at the high school level preferred

Excellent verbal and written communication abilities

Expertise in program development and organizational skills.

MA in School Administration.

Skills & Knowledge:

Members of the Corporation:

Provides information and makes necessary reports to the Members of the Corporation in those areas of the Principal's responsibilities.

Board of Directors:

Serves as an ex-officio member of any committee assigned.

Provides information requested and makes necessary reports to the Board of Directors in those areas of the Principal's responsibilities.

Relation to the President of Carmel:

Is responsible for carrying out all school policies and is responsible for the day-to-day operations.

Accepts the responsibility for the supervision and administration of academic personnel and programs related to the secondary students' lives.

Faculty and Staff

Assigns teacher class loads, co-curricular responsibilities, and teaching schedules.

Supervises and is the administrative liaison to the Assistant Principals, Athletic Director, Deans, and Student Activities Director.

Responsible for the implementation and evaluation of student discipline policies.

Responsible for the supervision, evaluation and development of the faculty and support staff under Principal’s jurisdiction.

Oversees and plans all faculty meetings and in-service programs.

Promotes open communication with the faculty and academic staff.

Collects and maintains all faculty records.

Develops job descriptions for all personnel related to academic operations.

Approves all trips sponsored by Carmel Catholic employees involving Carmel Catholic students and reviews materials related to these trips before distribution.

Coordinates faculty development programs that take place outside of Carmel Catholic.

Assists in the spiritual development of the faculty and staff in consultation with the Chief Mission Officer.

Curriculum:

Primary responsibility for the administration and supervision of the academic personnel, athletic personnel, academic programs, and procedures related to those programs.

Responsible for supervision of the Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning and the Assistant Principal for Student Services.

Provides leadership and direction in planning, developing, experimenting, and evaluating all aspects of the instructional and co-curricular programs.

Works with the Assistant Principal on individual instructional projects and problems.

Students and Parents

Available to students and/or parents for consultation.

Delegates student scheduling and course selection to the Assistant Principal

Develops/approves the general academic procedures and programs, including graduation, awards, and honors.

Responsible for implementing the admission policy in consultation with the Director of Admissions.

Responsible for the dismissal of any students in consultation with the Discipline Board.

Delegates the development of an effective student government and supervision of the student extracurricular program.

Supervises all student publications.

Assists in the spiritual development of students in consultation with the Chief Mission Officer.

Delegates the development of parent/teacher conferences and other parent/teacher programs.

Public Relations

Represents Carmel Catholic High School at all Principals’ Public Relations

Represents Carmel Catholic High School at all Principals’ meetings.

Represents the school to the East Suburban Catholic Conference, the Illinois High School Association, and the Archdiocesan Principals' Association.

School Administrator

Is an active participant, team member, and contributor to the Carmel Catholic Executive and Administrative teams.

Responsible for all forms and information of an academic nature requested by the governmental agencies or organizations with which Carmel is affiliated.

Responsible for updating all academic information that is printed or published.

Responsible for the sections of the handbook relative to the areas under the Principal's authority.

Is responsible for the development and implementation of emergency drills / procedures.

Financial Affairs

Responsible for the financial planning and budgeting for all areas related to the administration and supervision of the programs related to student life.

Works in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer and keeps open lines of communication regarding school finances.

Approves and develops the budget for the various curricular areas and co-curricular areas.

Recommends to the President for approval the budget related to academic programs and student life programs.

Reviews the monthly P&L for the academic areas with the Chief Financial Officer.

Signs/approves all academic department requests for spending.

Other administrative duties/projects as assigned.
