AI in Catholic Education
"An Exciting and Fearsome Tool"
Generative AI is transforming how we teach and learn: offering new opportunities for personalization, efficiency, and creativity. But alongside the promise comes complexity. As Catholic educators, we respond not with fear or uncritical enthusiasm, but with cautious optimism, discerning what is gained, what is lost, and what must be preserved. This site offers AI policy guidance, curated tool recommendations, and professional development resources designed to help Catholic school leaders and educators navigate this evolving landscape with wisdom, clarity, and mission-centered purpose.
HPL GenAI Guidance and Policy Templates
As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools become increasingly accessible to students and teachers, many Catholic schools and dioceses now find themselves needing to provide guidance or establish policies governing how these technologies should be used within their communities. Higher-Powered Learning at the University of Notre Dame developed the following documents to support Catholic school and diocesan leaders in establishing clear expectations for generative AI.
-
Overview: GenAI Policy and Guidance for Catholic Schools This overview document explains why generative AI requires deliberate policy attention in schools and outlines key considerations for Catholic school leaders. It provides background on the research landscape, legal considerations, data privacy, and practical strategies for implementing AI policies and guidance.
-
AI Use Frameworks This resource helps schools conceptualize how students may appropriately use AI in academic contexts. It explores different AI use scales developed by schools and provides considerations for designing a clear framework that distinguishes between assistive uses, collaborative uses, and prohibited uses of AI.
-
Student AI Policy Template This template, written in student-facing language, establishes clear expectations for student use of generative AI tools in connection with schoolwork. It emphasizes the ethical and responsible engagement with AI technologies.
-
Employee AI Policy Template This template, written in employee-facing language, establishes clear expectations for employee use of generative AI tools in instructional, professional, and administrative contexts. It addresses responsibilities such as reviewing AI-generated content, protecting student data, communicating expectations to students, and thoughtfully transforming assessment practices.
