Goals for 2022 in Grade 2

By: Danielle Villhard, ACE 27 - New York

ACE 27 - Danielle VillhardAs we work into this still-new year, I can’t help but look back on where I’ve been as a second grade teacher in New York these past two years and think forward to my goals heading into this new semester. With so much excitement already - Catholic Schools Week, the historical date we are deeming the “official second grade holiday” (2-22-22), and the 100th day of school, just to name a few - these goals are at the forefront of my mind as I complete my ACE journey and discern what comes next.

Here are a few goals I have for 2022:

Grow in relationships with my students

I always hoped that I would get to know the students I would serve during my time as a teacher, but nothing could prepare me for just how special my students have become to me. From offering band-aids for paper cuts, to hearing the latest news of one student’s beloved pet dog, to celebrating birthdays and baby siblings, the 52 students I have had the joy of teaching over these two years have changed my life for the better. This year, I want to be intentional about each interaction, building on relationships we’ve built together and growing our classroom community.

Challenge myself to the same standards as I push my students towards

Students in my classroom learn rather quickly that Ms. V has high expectations. I frequently encourage my students to try new things and challenge themselves, reminding them that when things get tough, we don’t give up! Now, entering the next chapter of my life post-ACE, I have the goal to hold myself to those same standards and high expectations. With the example set by my students, I challenge myself to try new things, take the extra step, and get out of my comfort zone, too. One example is in the way my students encourage me in the same way I try to encourage them as I train for my first half-marathon this spring!

Make the most of each moment

Being a teacher and tending to the needs, questions, and joys of 30 students each day, it can be difficult to be fully present in each moment. However, it’s in the little moments - when a student finally aces a spelling quiz, when the whole class earns their “Friday Surprise,” when students draw me a picture, and so many more moments - that I’m reminded of my “why” for teaching. This year, my final goal is to step back and make the most of these moments.
