Where We Serve: Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City

We have a very unique house with a lot of history, located within view of the capitol building. The house is centrally located, only miles away from the revitalized Bricktown, downtown district. Whether running, cooking, praying, doing science experiments, or rocking out with our textbooks out, we all support and love one another.

What is your favorite teaching moment?

I struggled with my 8th graders all year--both with getting them motivated and teaching them physics. I was so excited for my gravity day because I was going to get to stand on a table and drop things all class. At first, the students were apathetic because they thought they already knew everything. Suddenly, when things were not dropping as expected the students were enthralled. We had a wonderful afternoon predicting how items would drop and then developing a theory to explain the results. I left that day full of energy and excited to continue working those students.

What has been an ACE summer class that you've enjoyed so far?

I have really enjoyed Doc Doyle's class, Intro to High School Teaching because I have learned a new way of approaching the art of 'thinking.' It requires a great understanding and ability to truly construct meaning in students, and the art of doing so is quite extraordinary and requires a lot of creative thinking on a teacher's part.

What is your favorite Community story?

My favorite memory of life in OKC is not so much a story or an event as it is a year's worth of long, laughter-filled community dinners and relaxing weekend mornings making waffles of great variety. I really value the time we spent around the table or together in the kitchen, cooking and chatting.

What's been the best moment of your ACE experience so far?

The best moment of my ACE experience so far is how one of my students from Practicum hugs me everyday on the way out of class. Even though I am unsure of my own abilities, his hug affirms me that that I am making a small difference.

How has ACE shaped your spiritual life?

Talking to ACEr's about their faith journey has helped me reflect on my own. It is refreshing seeing young adults so committed and active in their faith. I have learned a lot about the Catholic church both as a student and a teacher. My professors help me think about my spiritual life in a way I had never thought of before, and my students love for God inspires me on a daily basis.

What is your favorite ACE tradition, and why?

My favorite ACE tradition is definitely Bowling Night. Bowling night is a great time for the new cohort to get to know the old cohort and begin their community bonding. Plus, who doesn't love an awesome night of bowling, costumes, and pizza? This event is where I felt myself as part of my community for the first time.
