Life in the City

Indianapolis balances all of the big city fun with its pockets of nature on the Central Canal towpath, the lively Broad Ripple neighborhood (where our favorite ice cream place lives), and the tranquil Indianapolis Canal Walk. While you could get your fill of all things sports (Colts, Pacers, Fever), arts (Newfields Art Museum), and entertainment (Indianapolis State Fair, Carmel Christkindlmarkt, Indy 500) without ever leaving the city, Indy is a central midwest city that makes traveling accessible! Only 2 hours from Notre Dame, 2 hours from Louisville, 3 hours from Chicago, and 5 hours from Cleveland, you're never too far from a new city to explore with your ACE friends. Go hoosiers!

How do you hope to grow in your experience as an ACE Teacher?

I hope to grow more in my Catholic Faith, not only by teaching in the example of Christ the Teacher but also through everything I will learn from my students. I hope the ACE Teacher experience allows me to grow in traits like patience, kindness, and care!

If you had to pick one word to describe your ACE experience thus far, what would it be? Why?

Fruitful: Teaching, in my experience, grows one's capacity for love, awareness, service, etc. It empties one so they can be filled even more. My impression is that many careers can dull, diminish, or drain you by the end of each day, week, and year. Teaching, and the friends I have through the program, have all born so much fruit for me. I feel stronger and more generous after this last year of ACE.

What is one of your favorite memories from your first year in ACE Teaching Fellows?

For my birthday several students bought me a T-shirt with my school picture on it and an affectionate nickname below it. When they came up to me proudly giggling before school to give it to me I felt so much love, joy and appreciation for them! I am incredibly lucky to have the most wonderful students. This act of generosity was heartwarming and an amazing symbol of the best part of the job––the kids!

What are you most looking forward to most as an ACE teacher this year?

I'm most looking forward to supporting my students in both academic activities and extracurricular pursuits. I want them to know I care about their success in my class and their success in their own passions.

How do you hope to grow in your experience as an ACE Teacher?

I hope to grow in my faith and to become a more effective educator. Catholic schools have a beautiful mission to form students as the whole person and I am excited to play a part in educating the next generation.

What is one of your favorite memories from your first year in ACE Teaching Fellows?

From this past year, my favorite day with my students was when our school, St. Mark's, put on our annual World Cultural Heritage Day. It was so beautiful to see my students flourish in expressing themselves, in being proud of who they are, and in being curious and encouraging to each other!
